Magical Maribell

Halibut fishing in Maribell is second to None!

The shallow sandy bays are alive with dabs, and the Halibut come in to feed on them. Halibut are caught here in areas as shallow as ten or twelve meter’s. You can fish really close to the houses or move further out in among the small islands and plateaus for Cod and Coalies along with Wolffish, Ling, Haddock, and Redfish. The open sea is only a 25 minute boat trip from the houses, there are some fantastic grounds out towards Risoya and its group of small islands.Fishing for Big Cod in the 50 to 80m areas produces some massive fish, the Halibut out on these grounds are hunting the reefs and plateaus for the bait fish and the small coalies, and can strike when you least expect it !! You need to be prepared for a big hit on your lures here because of the Halibut, so your reel drag must be set correctly, or you will be snapped off and lose the fish of a lifetime.

There are plenty of sheltered places to fish, Kilfjord is only a few minutes out from Maribell and the small island Gasvaer is opposite the entrance to Kilfjord. When you come out of the bay where the houses are situated, you come into Kvalsundet, head out of the bay to the right and you come in to some shallow sandy bays and inlets, this is perfect for the big Halibut, that are coming into the shallows looking for flatties to feed on. A good method to attract the halibut is to fish for the flatties with baited hooks, get the flatties on the feed and the activity will draw the Halibut in. Be sure to have strong hooks like the Sakuma Manta for instance, on your flattie rigs, Ian caught the Halibut in the picture below, on a 2/0 manta hook, fishing for flatties to use as bait !!!!!!
